Nannie B. Hairston
NFS
Medium: Bronze, Lifesize

Type of Work: Commissioned Portrait

Year: 2005

Comments: This portrait sculpture is a visible demonstration of my profound respect for Ms. Hairston. She was the one who believed in the importance of the Captain Schaeffer bust I wanted to sculpt in 1997, who led the extensive fund-raising campaign for raising the money to get it cast, and who orchestrated the memorable unveiling ceremony at Schaeffer Memorial Baptist Church on June 6, 1998. The sculpture is also an expression of public gratitude for her 50+ years of social activism in Montgomery County, Virginia, with many people generously contributing toward the bronze casting and pedestal.

Location: Montgomery Co. Government Center.

She arrived in 1953 from the coalfields of McDowell County, West Virginia, with her husband, John T. Hairston and her children. Nannie set about her work, despite entrenched segregation. The recipient of many awards and honors, she is a long-time member of Schaffer Memorial Baptist Church. In celebration of Nannie B. Hairston's life and work, grateful citizens dedicated this monument.

This photo allows me, in a subtext kind of way, to incorporate Nannie's characteristic expression, "Praise the Lord!" May this expression, with all its sentiment of blessing, despite adversity, permeate my life and work as well . . . .
