Brunhilda

MEDIUM:
Wood, Oak

TYPE OF WORK:
Commissioned “Chain saw carving” from 9’ tree stump

YEAR: 2011

COMMENTS: After working for weeks on the molding/casting of desktop replicas of the Thomas Jefferson/Isaac Jefferson portrait busts—detail work--it was exhilarating to “work large,” on this tree carving project, and to be outside all the time, with the beautiful Ellett Valley in view!  Working on Brunhilda felt like coming back to home base, because I got started in sculpture, as a boy, by whittlin’ pine sticks. I was also strongly reminded of my time carving Ancestor Tree lnk -a memorable project- several years ago for my good friend Rex Hartson. I used chain saws, mainly, but for the final shaping relied upon a sidegrinder with #50-grit sandpaper, and for detail work, chisels and a dremel tool.
