This portrait of Captain Charles Schaeffer, who was sent by the Freedman's Bureau to Christiansburg after the Civil War to help build the lives of freed slaves, was donated to the Schaeffer Memorial Baptist Church. The project was coordinated, on behalf of the church, by Nannie Hairston, a remarkable woman and longtime activist.
