LUCKY BOY

TYPE OF WORK:
Portrait

COMMENTS:
This figure (approximately 10" H), I did for my brother Stefan, who is indeed a lucky boy, especially with his recent marriage to Anya. Originally, the figure was intended as a maquette for a possible larger version perhaps to be cast in bronze. Various circumstances intervened, however, to delay and the larger version never materialized. In the meantime-a period of time which persisted for at least a couple of years--the maquette was vulnerable to cracking and breaking over time. The head even came off. Poor Lucky Boy! Finally, the winter of '04-'05, Stefan asked if I could repair Lucky Boy, which I did, most carefully, and then as a wedding present, had him molded and cast in bonded bronze, by Art de Luxe, of Queens, NYC.

Lucky Boy is modeled from Stefan, face and figure. Depicted as the boyish adventurer and traveler just back from tramping around Lincoln Swamp, perhaps, and with just a touch of the imp about him (notice his ears), Lucky Boy is possessed of an inherent sense of his own good luck or confidence in the presence of a guardian angel.

Included are Stefan's good luck totem animals (the owl on his shoulder and the frog in the cuff of his right pantleg), a four-leaf clover on his belt buckle, a bag of money between his feet (he's done pretty well in the stock market), and an open book nearby (he's a writer).
